One of the largest TPAs (Third-Party Administrators) in Hong Kong, Heals.Asia, needed to cooperate with a large healthcare provider that used the FHIR standard. The TPA had been storing its data in a proprietary format, exchanging information with many other companies in real time.
The third party needed access to the provider directory with the ability to search for healthcare professionals by speciality, location, and other parameters via an API in FHIR format. It was an essential part of the appointment scheduling process.
which made linking them quite challenging. We offered a solution to map those structures, considering nesting levels, entities, and other nuances.
To allow the data transfer in FHIR format, we created FHIR profiles for the TPA and determined the required FHIR resources as well as corresponding business processes. Our team used three main FHIR resources: Organization, Practitioner, and PractitionerRrole.
When all necessary profiles, FHIR extensions, and terminologies were ready, the team ran an FHIR server. We used our custom solution — the Kodjin FHIR Server, built from scratch for high-load systems.
The external provider could access the data from the Kodjin FHIR Server via an FHIR-compliant API.
When the solution was ready for deployment, we provided the TPA’s staff with the necessary documentation and training. Users could test the system and ask questions in real time. Thus, we ensured that our solution would be of practical use to the client.
